doris bloom

Painter | Denmark

Doris Bloom completed architectural ceramics at Johannesburg Art College and then continued her studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art in Copenhagen.

She works within the genre of live multimedia performance installations, often using drawing, painting often in collaborative connections and projects, among others with the South African artists Willem Boshoff, Kendel Gears and William Kentridge. With the latter in “Projected Artists – Memory and Geography”, which was promoted in Rome by Gallery Stefania Miscetti.

In 1985, Doris Bloom was included by Achille Bonito Oliva in his “Nuove Trame Dell Àrt” project in Rome and Pescara. She has since shown regularly in Italy and at several other European museums and galleries as well as in South Africa, China, Israel, Cairo and New York. London’s Tames Modern has shown her performance based video “The Macguffin” and lately the video “Southern Breeze” was part of the South African project “The Film will always be you” on tour of Australia.

In her work, Doris Bloom explores and challenges the mind and memory, pointing to a contemporary mapping of the human organism as it relates to the urban and the architectural. Her upbringing in Apartheid South Africa meant a physical presence in a colonized land mentally tied to a distant Europe. In her work, this becomes the vital source that measures her boundaries for cognitive understanding of place manifest in the universe.

Her paintings have been acquired by several public collections in the various countries, where she has exhibited. Among the prizes and grants Doris Bloom has received is the Danish Ministry of Culture’s Life Time Achievement.
