STELLA EAST

Glowing colours, crystal clear details and a soft, painterly naturalism characterizes Stella East's paintings. Her motives have often a touch of surrealism and decorative, symbolic elements.

Since 1983 I have illustrated 15 picturebooks/books for Norwegian and Canadian authors. With "Wolf Cub Sim: Stories about the World Outside," 2007 I made my debut also as an author. "Wolf Cub Sim" was purchased by The Norwegian Arts Council's "Purchasing Programme," won a diploma in "The Year's Most Beautiful Books," was published in Denmark in 2007, and in Germany, 2009.

My Masters Thesis "Picturing Stories," 2008, York University, Toronto, examines the visual story within picturebooks as an art form and a language, within a storytelling and fine art tradition. "Picturing Stories" was purchased by The Norwegian Children's book Institution and The Telemark College. Some ideas from this thesis were presented at The 31st IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) World Congress Copenhagen 2008, at The Year's Most Beautiful Books, Oslo 2009, and as an article in The Norwegian Drawers Association members' magazine, "Numer," 2009.
