MIA MAKELA

Media Artist, Cultural Historian | Finland

 

Mia Makela is a Finnish media artist and cultural historian, whose work explores intersections between art and other disciplines: technology, science, ecology. Makela exhibits chosen themes in the forms of video, installations, audio guides, expeditions, and related publications. Makela, internationally acknowledged pioneer in the field of live cinema, has shown her work and lectured all over the globe.

 

In her latest works Makela delves deep into our relationships with other species. Academic and empirical research process forms the basis of projects such as Looking for Mr.Blue, a video installation focused on the cultural history of the migration route of a goose. History of an Impossible Destiny, a 4-channel video installation on the honeybee´s long journey into the heart of anthropocene.  Zootopia- a posthumanist and feminist audio guide for zoos. Green Matters – video handbook for algae gatherers - an exploration in the world of green algae, traditional weaving and the Baltic Sea.

 

Currently she is doing (artistic) research on minerals and trees.
