Larisa Pelle, born in 1977 in Russian Karelia, is a documentary filmmaker and multimedia artist based in Helsinki and Paris. After years as a reporter for National Geographic, she moved on to documentaries focusing on themes of identity and heritage. Her recent works deal with post-Soviet world, indigenous peoples and the ways to construct one's identity. Pelle uses written text, photography and video as her media, often combining journalistic and artistic approaches to create multi-dimensional pieces.

 

Pelle has spent 2017-2019 as artist in residency in Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris.

Her latest works include "State of Emergency", a collective documentary amidst COVID-19 pandemic and "New Soviet Picture", multimedia work on post-Soviet heritage.

Currently she's working on a larger project "Fairytales of the World's Peoples" - a literary and multimedia work based on her years spent with indigenous communities.

 

Pelle holds a Master of Journalism degree from Saint Petersburg State University, Russia, and Master of Arts from Aalto University, Finland. She also teaches workshops on creative writing and storytelling.
