KirsiMarja Metsähuone


KirsiMarja Metsähuone works with film, video, photography and collage. She is interested in non-narrative in film and video and fragmentary narration in photographic expression. Often she works with image-text hybrids. The interwoven and ofter overlapping themes in her work are related to human interaction, urban action, feminist issues, juxtaposing the incompatible, decay, memory, body, identity, deconstruction.



Her short films, videos and photographs have been shown widely in exhibitions and festivals e.g. in the United States, Finland, Italy, France, Spain, England, Canada and South America. Metsähuone holds a B.F.A. degree in experimental film, video and photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her M.F.A. degree in media arts is from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts.


One of her most recent photography projects is Ghosts of Gesture (Il movimento fantasma), started in 2009. In the series Metsähuone performs a dual role of a photographer and a person being photographed dressed in vintage dresses. The entire photo series has been shot in Italy. The performative Ghosts of Gesture explores movement in frozen time, imaginary memories and play of identities.
