Hrafnkell Sigurðsson

Born in Iceland in 1963, Hrafnkell Sigurðsson lives and works in Reykjavík.

Before starting art school in 1982 He had already formed the experimental Rock band Oxsmá which took an active part in the sensational post-punk scene in Reykjavík in the 1980s, a scene that brought us bands like the Sugarcubes, (for whom Hrafnkell designed several album covers). After completing his studies in Reykjavík he proceeded to The Jan Van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht. He spent most of his time in London between 1993 and 2004, completing a MFA at Goldsmiths College in 2002.

Hrafnkell has held thirty private exhibitions in seven countries and collective exhibitions can be counted by the score in museums and galleries around the world. His work can be found in several collections, private and public in Europe and The United States.  In 2007 Hrafnkell won the Icelandic Visual Art Award for “Crew”, his photographic series of soiled fisherman clothing.

He has continued to develop and expand  themes in works that are characterised by their spare and refined aesthetic, but nonetheless evoke a wide field of conceptual and social issues.
